We are excited to announce that the Mary Rohrscheib Teaching has officially come to a close. This year we received dozens of applications from all over the central Illinois region, making the selection process extremely difficult.
The Mary Rohrscheib Teaching Scholarship was created to help celebrate and encourage our next generation of teachers, and we believe that our two winners exemplify all the qualities that make teachers so special. Continue reading to learn more about these aspiring educators.
2025 Scholarship Winners
Congratulations to the 2025 Mary Rohrscheib Teaching Scholarship Winners Lexie Damery, Aiden Etchason, Taryn Jankousky, and Angel Yin!
To apply, each student wrote an essay about a special teacher who made a big impact on their life.
Meet Lexie

My name is Lexie Damery, and I am thrilled to be a recipient of the Mary Rohrscheib Teacher Scholarship. I am a proud graduate of Mount Zion High School and will be attending the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign this fall, where I will be studying special education.
Mr. Chris Weirman, my seventh-grade algebra teacher, played a pivotal role in shaping my career aspirations. His unwavering support during my grandmother’s battle with cancer had a profound impact on me. I am incredibly grateful to all the wonderful educators who have shaped me into the person I am today.
Meet Aiden

My name is Aiden Etchason and I am a senior at Millikin University. I am from Decatur and have lived in Decatur my entire life. I am majoring in Secondary English education, with subsequent endorsements in Special Education and Middle Grades English. Along with taking classes, I am a member of the Big Blue football team. In my free time, I love traveling, spending time with family, and working at Kenney’s Ace Hardware in Decatur. My schooling years were always enjoyable and meaningful, and I want to create that same experience for my future students.
My junior high and sophomore year English teacher, Mrs. Dunscomb, inspired me to enjoy English not only in the school setting, but in day-to-day life, and I hope to be able to do the same in my classroom.
Meet Taryn

I’m Taryn Jankousky, a graduate of Glenwood High School and a current student at Lincoln Land Community College. Inspired by my third grade teacher, Mrs. Allison, I am pursuing a career in Elementary Education to be a positive role model, just like Mrs. Allison was for me. I strive to be a passionate and inspiring educator, and believe in every student that I will have in the future.
My third grade teacher, Mrs. Allison, inspired me to study Elementary Education and someday become a teacher. She motivates me to leave a positive impact on students’ lives and to always make everyone feel welcome.
Meet Angel

My name is Angel Yin, and I’m an incoming freshman at Northwestern University. I chose to write my essay on Mr. Jacob Davis because he not only taught me AP Chemistry, but his passion for teaching and constant encouragement inspired me to become the person I am today. His influence led me to create my 501(c)(3) nonprofit, Young Chemistry Scholars, which aims to spark scientific curiosity in young students, just as he once did for me.
